Because it is important to hear the concerns of our community, we periodically ask them what they think about current issues that impact their lives. Recently, there has been a lot of buzz about our nation’s ongoing health crisis, and so we asked the following question: What is the biggest problem with health care in the US, and what is the solution?

“I believe the mental health system needs to be improved with more government funding, especially for homeless vets. Having worked at SFVA, (San Francisco Veterans Hospital), for a bit, I realized how big the problem of vets being homeless was. The whole mental health system needs to be changed, so many issues like addiction, suicide, mental illness, anorexia, etc., are kept quiet and ‘hush- hush, it’s sad that these illnesses are virtually ignored in today’s society. Mental health should be a class in grammar school to start educating people about it.”

“I’ve always felt that health care should be covered for all citizens through taxation. I’ve been told that’s not American, but what is more important to a country than the physical well being of its people? The biggest problem is health care not being readily available to all.”

“Access is the biggest issue for me and my family. [even with insurance] there are never any specialist appointments. The closest facility is 43 minutes away and my doctor is never available. I hate the 1-800 numbers, I hate talking to a computer, and I can’t see anyone ‘not on the list’, unless I want to pay out of pocket. My co-pay is $70 to see my physician… Let’s not even talk about my co-pays for a specialist.”

Heard it from the workers!
What’s a person to do? Keep the job and lose the soul or risk losing the job but keep the soul? What if I told you that you could have both the job and the soul?
Not sure if there is anything that can be done, I work at a company in Joliet IL. The other day some management members thought it would be "funny" to decorate the V.P.'s office with the gay pride flag, pictures of men kissing and a border with a picture of a steer, with something to the effect of “I would rather be kissed by a steer than a queer!" When they were questioned on it by other office personnel they said "it's just a joke, Relax!" Of all people an H.R. person!! I sent an email to the local media and nothing.
Things are just going too far and would like to see something happen so they don't think they can get away with this kind of behavior. Please do not let them know I sent this as I need my job.
In the excerpt above much was left out from the original E-Mail. Clearly there was homophobic oppression in this workplace. The person who sent the E-Mail can go to the Workplace Rights Bureau in Illinois and fill out a complaint. We have laws that protect against discrimination in Illinois.
I will be reaching out to the V.P. of this company (which was named in the original contact form) but in the meantime how about starting a queer caucus of the IWW in Joliet? We have power! The workers can make or break a company, and by more than just going on strike.

Newly released emails obtained by Freedom of the Press Foundation strongly suggest that Mexican journalist Emilio Gutiérrez-Soto was targeted for detention by ICE for criticizing U.S. immigration policy in the media. Gutiérrez-Soto has been released.
Ecuador will reportedly withdraw asylum for Julian Assange, and he is expected to be arrested by UK authorities when he walks out the door. He has been living in the Ecuadorian embassy in London since 2012 and without visitors or internet access since March. He is in failing health. The US government has reportedly drafted charges against him for the publication of classified documents. No matter what you think of WikiLeaks, DOJ prosecution against them for publishing documents would be a unprecedented blow to the rights of countless US journalists who report on classified information, and would open others up to prosecution.
At the end of July, the White House press office told CNN reporter Kaitlan Collins that she was not allowed to attend a event in the Rose Garden that was otherwise open to the press. “Just because the White House is uncomfortable with a question regarding the news of day doesn’t mean the question isn’t relevant and shouldn’t be asked,” CNN said in a statement. “This decision to bar a member of the press is retaliatory in nature and not indicative of an open and free press. We demand better.”
Electronic Frontier Foundation sues to invalidate FOSTA, an Unconstitutional Internet Censorship Law. EFF is asking a court to declare the "Allow States and Victims to Fight Online Sex Trafficking Act" of 2017 ("FOSTA") unconstitutional and prevent it from being enforced. The law was written so poorly that it actually criminalizes a substantial amount of protected speech and, according to experts, actually hinders efforts to prosecute sex traffickers and aid victims.
